Valour, the facility support dog with the Langley Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, meets members of the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society. Valour was trained through the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides and sponsored by the TLFCS.
LANGLEY, BC – Encompass Support Services Society is excited to announce that Valour, a professionally trained facility support dog, is the newest addition to the Langley Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, thanks to the generous support from Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides and the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society, and in partnership with the Langley Community Health and Hospital Foundation.
Valour was trained and placed through Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, a nationally recognized organization based in Oakville, Ontario that provides highly trained Assistance Dogs to meet the different needs of people with various disabilities and support needs. In addition to facility support, these dogs are trained in specialized skills to support individuals who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, have a physical or medical disability, diagnosed with intractable epilepsy or Type 1 Diabetes, and living with autism. Valour represents an investment of approximately $35,000 by the Lions Foundation for his lengthy and time-intensive training and preparation for his role at the Langley Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (CYAC).
Facility support dogs, like Valour, play a critical role in providing trauma-informed care to vulnerable individuals during some of their most difficult moments. They help to reduce anxiety and bring moments of relief and connection to children and youth, as well as staff, as they navigate through the impacts of trauma and stress. “Valour’s specialized training will provide comfort, emotional support, and a sense of safety to children and youth during some of their most challenging moments. We are proud to invest in a resource that will help foster healing, resilience, and hope for young people and families in our community,” shared Jordan Sparrow, President of the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society. “[We are] honoured to sponsor Valour and support the important work of the Langley Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.”
The Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society has generously committed their ongoing support to ensure that Valour’s basic needs (i.e. food, veterinary costs, etc.) are cared for, reflecting “their deep commitment to the mental wellness of children, youth, and families in our community,” said Heather Scott, Executive Director of the Langley Community Health and Hospital Foundation. “Their generosity will help create a more comforting, trauma-informed environment for young people navigating incredibly difficult circumstances. We are grateful for their ongoing partnership and for the compassion they continue to show our community through their investment in healing and hope.”
“We rely heavily on the generosity of funders and donors to ensure that the Langley CYAC can offer a space for children and youth in Langley who have experienced abuse to begin their healing journey. We are beyond grateful to the Lions Foundation of Canada, the Township of Langley Firefighters’ Charitable Society, and the Langley Community Health and Hospital Foundation who have made the addition of Valour a reality,” said Loren Roberts, Executive Director of Operations with Encompass Support Services Society, the host organization for the Langley CYAC.
